Planning & Evaluation
Donor: Living Water International
Location: Nyakach, Kisumu County
Living Water Service Center (LWSC) has been operating a WASH Program Area in South and West Nyakach in Kenya. The goal of this program is to improve the physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing of 83,896 individuals in South and West Nyakach WPA. The four expected outcomes of the program include; i) Increased access to sustainable safe water for communities from 42% to 85% by December 2026, ii) Increased adoption of proper sanitation and hygiene practices and behavior for communities from 44% to 80% by December 2026, iii) Increased proportion of churches engaging in WASH development from 15% to 90% by December 2026 and iv) Increased resilience in communities by December 2026. Quarter three of financial year (FY) 2024 marks halfway through the implementation of the five-year program.
The purpose of this midline evaluation is to collect information on the status of the WPA since the baseline. The results from the midline survey will be used to inform changes or improvements to the program design moving forward as well as the length of the remaining period of the program.
Evaluation Methodology
LWSC commissioned a baseline to assess Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) relating to Christian witness, water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in the community; and foundational information for the WPA. The baseline a doped a mixed-methods approach using both quantitative and qualitative techniques.
Prior to kicking off the evaluation, a desk study and a document review was conducted which informed development of the survey tools; the consultant ensured the evaluation questions were aligned with the objective, outputs and outcomes of the project as well as previous assessments. The desk study was followed by semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews with key stakeholders

Data Collection Process
The data collection exercise identified and recruited enumerators and prior to undertaking data collection, the enumerators were trained and translations were done jointly to ensure uniformity while asking the questions. Upon completion of the training, the evaluation team conducted roll-play amongst themselves in order to pre-test the survey tools for consistency and flow which informed final revisions on the survey tools. Data collection was conducted for 20 days.
Data Analysis and Report Writing
Prior to analysis, the consultant undertook data cleaning which involved identifying responses that were improbable (outside the normally expected range) or impossible – outliers, inconsistent data, etc. During the analysis, descriptive statistics was generated for each question to show frequencies, proportions, and averages. Thematic coding and analysis was conducted for qualitative data by coding themes and patterns that were important and associated to specific research questions and have been incorporated in the report to triangulate quantitative findings. A draft report was prepared in line with the format required. The consultant presented key findings to the Project Team and incorporated the comments or additional information in preparing the final evaluation report.
